Sunday: Leadership and Crisis – CBS News

It’s been a year of seemingly nonstop political news, but this Sunday on Face the Nation, we’re taking a step back from the news cycle with a Thanksgiving Weekend book panel focused on some of history’s greatest leaders and thinkers – and the lessons they hold for today.  We’ll bring together four authors who have written new books about leadership in times of crisis.

Ron Chernow, the historian and author of “Grant,” will discuss his new biography of the man who commanded Union forces during the Civil War and would become the 18th President of the United States.

Mark Updegrove will join us to discuss his new book, “The Last Republicans,” which examines the presidencies of George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, exploring how the relationship between father and son helped shape American history over the last several decades.

We’ll also hear from Robert Dallek, the author of a new biography, “Franklin Delano Roosevelt: A Political Life,” which offers a sweeping – and at-times unexpected – look at the life and work of one of our most consequential presidents.

And we’ll interview Nancy Koehn, the author of “Forged in Crisis,” which looks back at five different historical figures who provided steady leadership and moral clarity in times of upheaval, including President Abraham Lincoln, abolitionist Frederick Douglass, environmentalist Rachel Carson, and others.

In addition to our leadership panel, we’ll also have a one-on-one conversation with author and historian Walter Isaacson about his new book, “Leonardo da Vinci,” examining how innovation and creativity can change the world.

Finally, it wouldn’t be Face the Nation without at least some political analysis – so we’ll round out the show with an expert panel to help us make sense of the latest developments in Washington and beyond. This Sunday, we’ll be joined by Reihan Salam, the executive editor of the National Review and a columnist for Slate, USA Today Washington Bureau Chief Susan Page, and Jamelle Bouie, the chief political correspondent at Slate and a CBS News Political Analyst.

It’s going to be an exciting broadcast, so make sure you tune in! Click here to check your local listings for airtimes.
