Search expected to resume for Merrillville woman in Lake Michigan

Law enforcement agencies were expected to resume a search Tuesday morning for a Merrillville woman in Lake Michigan.

Gary Police spokesman Commander Jack Hamady said in a release that the department was contacted around 7:28 p.m. about a woman in Lake Michigan off of Marquette Park who was possibly drowning at Marquette Park Beach, 1 Grand Blvd.

Police, along with the Gary Fire Department, arrived and started searching for the woman, according to the release. Witnesses at the scene told officers the woman is a 24-year-old from Merrillville and was wearing a red shirt and gray shorts, a subsequent release said.

Gary first responders immediately called the Lake County Sheriff’s Department Aviation, Marine and Aquatics Unit, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources as well as the U. S. Coast Guard to assist in the search, according to the release. Search teams postponed the search until Tuesday morning because of dangerous lake conditions and darkness, the release said.

Anyone with information is urged to call Hamady at 219-881-1210 or Indiana Department of Natural Resources Officer Tyler Brock at 219-879-5710.
