Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., slammed House Republican leadership for not backing the effort to impeach Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, saying it is not bold when it comes to oversight.
Gaetz, a member of the House Judiciary Committee, is one of those pushing for the impeachment of Rod Rosenstein. House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., has announced he does not support the impeachment effort.
Gaetz and a group of House conservatives had introduced articles of impeachment against Rosenstein, who oversees special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation. The congressmen are angered by delays in turning over documents relating to the start of the Russia probe.
“We filed articles of impeachment,” Gaetz said in a Friday interview on Fox News’ “America Newsroom.”
“If we don’t receive the documents and witnesses we need absent unnecessary redactions it’s my expectations that Congressman Mark) Meadows, Congressman Jim) Jordan and myself will seek a vote on impeachment when the Congress returns for its next session.”
Asked why he was getting a pushback from Republican leadership, Gaetz replied: “They aren’t very bold people when it comes to oversight.”
“We continue to set deadlines and then we allow the deadlines to lapse and then we make concessions and then we set more deadlines and have more meetings. I’m new to the Congress. It just seems like low-energy oversight.”
Gaetz called on President Donald Trump to order the release of the documents.
“He can,” Gaetz said. “I would call on him to do that. “
