President Donald Trump bragged to a crowd in Ohio that he could “destroy” the careers of Republican politicians who didn’t support him.
Speaking at a rally in Ohio on Saturday, ahead of Tuesday’s special election in the state’s 12th congressional district, the president’s message to Republicans to line up behind his agenda was clear.
“How do you get 100 percent of anything? We always have somebody who says ‘I don’t like Trump, I don’t like our president, he destroyed my career,’” the president told the crowd, The Hill reported.
“I only destroy their career because they said bad things about me and you fight back and they go down the tubes and that’s OK,” he added.
Candidates backed by the president, including Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp, have recently seen success in their primary elections—although the case of Luther Strange suggests that Trump’s backing doesn’t guarantee success.
However, Republican Troy Balderson is clearly hoping President Trump can provide some additional support when he faces off against Democrat Danny O’Connor on Tuesday, in what is predicted to be a tight race, with a Monmouth University poll showing Balderson with 44 percent of support and his opponent with 43 percent.
Indeed, Balderson took the opportunity to underline his connection with the president following Trump’s speech—stating he was prepared to fight for the Trump agenda.
“Mr. President, we don’t want to go back. I’m not tired of winning,” Balderson told the crowd, CNN reported.
“If you want someone who will fight for President Trump’s economic agenda, that is putting America back to work, then I need your help and I need your vote on Tuesday,” he added.
And as well as backing the Republican, Trump took the time to take a swift dig at his opponent, tweeting on Saturday morning ahead of the rally: “Troy Balderson, running for Congress from Ohio, is in a big Election fight with a candidate who just got caught lying about his relationship with Nancy Pelosi, who is weak on Crime, Borders & your 2nd Amendment-and wants to raise your Taxes (by a lot). Vote for Troy on Tuesday!”
After the rally, the president described O’Connor as a “total puppet” and once again urged voters to turn out for Balderson.
…Danny O’Connor is a total puppet for Nancy Pelosi and Maxine Waters – Danny wants to raise your taxes, open your borders, and take away your 2nd Amendment. Vote for Troy on Tuesday!
